U.S. National Whitewater Center

U.S. National Whitewater Center
(written by guest blogger/Lauren Barker’s father, Carroll Payseur)

Last year I discovered one of North Carolina’s secret gems. Many have discovered theU.S. National Whitewater Center long before me, and many more are discovering it every day.

There are many things to do at the NWC including riding the rapids, zip lines, wall climbing, canopy tours through the “jungle,” and a relaxing float on the Catawba River. My favorite is riding the rapids. There are several class 3 rapids and one class 4 rapid. It is a great ride which I could do over and over again.

But there are other events that go on that do not actually involve physical participation. On Thursday and Saturday nights you can relax on the grounds around the rapids or on the patio at the restaurant listening to live bands. On Thursday nights you can also watch “Big Water.”  This is when the NWC raises the water level by several feet, opening it up to many brave rafters. I haven’t done this yet, but I’m sure I will eventually participate.

Last week the NWC hosted the BYOB Festival (Build Your Own Boat). Registered teams entered their own homemade, human-powered rafts determined to defeat the rapids. Photos from the event are below.

The NWC offers something for everyone, whether as a participant or a spectator. Hours spent at the NWCcan get away from you before you know it.  I call it great entertainment at a very inexpensive price. I encourage everyone to attend, whether participating in the events or just having a relaxing evening after a difficult day. It is well worth the time.
